What’s your value?

Uncategorized Jan 31, 2023

Just a quick reminder that your value is NOT just in:

  • working hard
  • being organised
  • being a team player.

I’m sure you’ve been praised countless times for those things.

But they are NOT your only economic value. Not even close.

My 70-year-old next door neighbour Betty is very hard working; organised and enthusiastic. She’s out in her garden every day, working hard, organising her planting, working in a team with her grandchildren, enthusiastically tackling the weeding.

She has all the qualities you claim make you valuable to your firm.

So why don’t they hire Betty?

She would be MUCH cheaper than you.

Because….

If they put her in front of the legal document you’re working on today, she wouldn’t know what it was or why it exists - let alone whether clause 9 is ‘market’; how to communicate your concerns to the client; negotiate a change and draft replacement language that is vaguely coherent and makes everyone happy.

You get my point.

Betty does NOT have your:

  • education and qualifications
  • technical and market knowledge
  • experience and skillsets
  • professional and industry relationships
  • unique personal strengths

Don’t forget about or discount those things just because people around you also have them.

They are not universal.

They make you economically valuable.

The better you can articulate that value, the more confidence you’ll feel and the more effectively you’ll be able to leverage it to create the career results you deserve.
