The "Likability" Trap

Uncategorized May 14, 2025

You're sat at your desk reviewing work from a junior colleague.

They’ve done a good job, apart from missing a couple of “small” points.

You know you “should” give the doc back to your colleague to update…

But what if he thinks you’re being pedantic or pernickety? 😬

Maybe you’ll just fix it yourself…

Sound familiar?

This is quite a common fear for professional women.

➡️ We want to be “likeable", because apparently that’s very important.

➡️ At work we’re held to very high standards when it comes to detail.

And yet …

➡️ It's also implied to us in various ways that it’s NOT likeable for us to be too directive or authoritative. That, apparently, makes us “difficult”.

Dear lord. Let the tightrope walking begin. Again.

I don’t have a magic bullet to change society and all of those ridiculous expectations. 🤷‍♀️

I just want you to know that it’s not a YOU problem.

It makes total sense that you hesitate to send the work back.

And with awareness, comes power and choice.

You’ve got this! 🔥
