I was working with a client recently and I asked her:
“What’s your economic value to the company you work for?”
The question totally threw her. She could tell me some of her strengths (after a bit of prodding…) but she’d never really thought about herself in economic terms.
What I wanted to know was, why did they pay her a salary? How did she contribute to the revenue of the company? What would the cost to the business be if she stepped out?
I know it can seem a bit transactional to think about your work in this way, but employment IS a transaction! It’s just an exchange of value. You provide value and your company gives you money in return. The more value you provide, the more money they’re likely to pay you.
And here’s the problem if you haven’t thought about it in these terms before….
My client was already providing a TON of value. That’s what we discovered by the end of the session. It’s what I always discover with my clients.
BUT, she couldn’t articulate it and she hadn’t internalised it.
She wanted a promotion, but she couldn’t articulate her $ value. She wanted to feel more confident, but she didn’t see all of the amazing value she had already created or her capacity to create bigger, better value at the next level.
She was left with self-doubt and no clear business case for promotion.
She’s not alone. I’ve been there myself and perhaps this resonates with you too...
Here’s the good news. She’d already done the hard work. She’d already created the value. We just had to find ways to remind her brain of everything she was capable of.
You can do the same. If you’re being paid a salary, there’s a reason. You’re already creating $ value. Start with these exercises:
