Creating sustainable working habits this year

Uncategorized Jan 10, 2024

Hey {{first_name}}

Would you like to go into this year creating more sustainable habits at work?

Perhaps you’d like to leave the office at a reasonable hour more often. Maybe you want to create more time to go to the gym, see friends or go on that date…

Sounds reasonable.

So why aren’t you doing those things already?

I’m excited for you if you’ve made a resolution to prioritise your wellbeing or career sustainability this year. But the truth is, most people don’t stick to them.

And that’s because we have a human brain, that is much more interested in short-term safety and comfort than longer-term hopes and dreams.

And I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but staying in the office until midnight rather than going home, is often the more “comfortable” option to your brain.

It’s more comfortable because it thinks the alternative is:

  • feeling anxious about your never-ending to-do list.
  • worrying about new work that might appear in the morning.
  • fear that your boss will think you’re lazy or uncommitted.

With an unmanaged mind, that fear will almost always win.

So, we stay at our desk, we don’t go to the gym, we work through lunch.

This is why self-awareness and mindset management are SO important. Especially in an industry that encourages people to work and be available 24/7.

So, please make your resolutions. That is great. But if you want to keep them, the next step is to start getting curious about what’s going on in your brain.
