"But what if I actually AM an imposter?"

I was running a webinar a few days ago on ‘How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome’ and someone in the audience asked me this question…

“But what if I actually AM an imposter?”

She understood, intellectually, that some people out there might believe that they don’t deserve their success. And that by all objective standards, those people would be wrong. She just couldn’t believe that that might be true in her case.

If this is you....and you don't quite believe that imposter syndrome is created by your THOUGHTS and not by some objective 'truth' about your performance, let me offer you this quick 2-step assessment of whether you actually ARE an imposter:

  1. Did you lie on your CV or at interview? If not, you're NOT a fraud.
  2. Did your employer put money in your bank account last month? If yes, it's because you created some economic value for them, i.e. you're NOT a fraud.

Finally, just a note that if you’re in any kind of industry that involves continuous professional growth, you will NEVER be perfect at your job. You will always have more to learn. You will always make mistakes. There will always be people who do it ‘better’.

That doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. It doesn't mean you're a fraud. It doesn't mean you don't deserve your current success. It’s just the business model you're working within.
