When you want recognition, but can't accept it

Uncategorized Feb 26, 2025

The big boss walks into your office with a giant smile on her face.

She congratulates you for running a successful closing.

Apparently the client has called and is VERY happy.

She looks at you expectantly…

You know you “should” be happy at the recognition. But instead, you grimace and say “Well, we haven’t quite wrapped up the post-closing docs yet”.

And just like that…. the energy in the room plummets to the floor.

😬😬😬

However desperately you want it, you can’t accept the compliment, until you know that EVERYTHING is correct and complete.

Imagine if you accepted it…. and then they had to TAKE IT BACK because something turned out to be wrong! 😳

That fear is tough. I know.

It’s no wonder you push away recognition, if you believe you need a constant and perfect record to deserve it.

But here’s my question….

At what cost?

What damage is that belief doing to your confidence, your leadership presence, your relationships?

Try this...

Next time you receive a compliment, PAUSE before you respond.

Notice your URGE to push it away.

And consider the POSSIBILITY, that you might deserve it, even if it turns out that you're not perfect after all.
