I was at the gym on Sunday at 8am - when most sane people are in bed.
It was empty apart from one other woman.
I’d finished some brutal leg workout π± and was sitting on a bench, gasping for breath, considering a 5-minute cooldown walk.
The other lady had just stepped off the treadmill.
And here's what went through my mind…
“If I get on that treadmill right now, she’s going to think I've been waiting for her … and she's going to feel bad”.
So… I paused for a moment. Took a breath. Filled my water bottle. And then casually strolled over to the treadmill.
And what happened?!
She looked over and said - “Oh I'm so sorry, I didn't realise you were waiting for me”.
It hit me right in the gut.
Why do we apologise simply for taking up space?! π€·βοΈ
I've seen this countless times in the gym. But it happens just as often at work.
Back in my ‘apologising for existing’ era.. I was:
β staying quiet when I had something to say
β trying not to be an “inconvenience
β putting other people’s time or needs above my own.
Even now, I sometimes still need the reminder - you’re allowed to take up space.
How about you?
